Side effect blogging to media

While the impact of blogging in the media world may not be as revolutionary as some would think, would be hard to argue that journalism is not, at the very least, shaken up phenomenon. As the new blog will appear by the time the statistics alone (blogcensus.com 'current estimates are 1.89097 million active blogs) make it obvious that time, no doubt, a-changin'. Less obvious, however, is almost identical changes slowly beginning to take place within, or, rather, out of the music industry.

Over the past few years, companies like Apple and the shiny, new, legal Napster has managed to hold the immense potential for distribution to the hindering of the Internet and they are a tidy little money-maker. By now, Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology can effectively remove the copy and play anywhere freedom that digital audio formats like MP3 used to offer and, more often than Otherwise, render your track to be downloaded not shareable than a physical CD. The only advantage left for the downloader to the new system is irresistible pleasure of instant click of a button and, seconds later, the acceptance of the product.

For musicians, changing it completely. Major music labels salaries still siphon off the lion's share of profits and the artist is still needed to sell large quantities of their music, either via download or CD, before they do anything at all. This is where you come in the netlabels

Netlabels' music of their artists are available on the Internet, usually in MP3 format, for free. It sounds like the kind of comic goodwill-based ideas that do not work in the real world, but almost blog-like frequency which netlabels are springing up indicates otherwise. While making money is nice, it seems that musicians, up from Russian jazz band on experimental electronica producer, really just want their music heard.

If a netlabel attaches to license their music is almost invariably one of the Creative Commons family - a non-profit organizations that offer 'flexible copyright licenses for creative works'. An intuitive selection tool on their website allows anyone to choose a license that is appropriate for their work, music or otherwise, and decide their own policies on matters such as commercial users and derivative works. Importantly, the specialized sampling-friendly licenses are also available, clearing known as gray areas in the world of traditional music law. Greyness Nowhere is this more evident than in the case of The Grey Album.

A project of DJ danger Mouse, is now one half of the astoundingly popular gnarls Barkley, The Grey Album mixed classic riffs and musical textures from The Beatles' White Album with a Capella vocals from Jay-Z Black Album. 3000 promo copy was sent by danger mouse himself, and landed him critical acclaim from, amongst others, rolling stone and pitchfork. There was, however, one problem: he had neglected to 'clear' to any of the samples used in the album and, therefore, in violation of a fair few copyright laws. Unsurprisingly, he has a few moments the unfortunate owner of a stop-and-desist order from EMI and, sensibly, complied fully.

Fans who are sharing the album on the Internet is significantly lower following, however, and began posting copies of the album for free download on their various websites and blogs. Additional threats of legal action from the EMI and Sony / ATV, both of which owns the copyright to much of the sample used, but it only served to strengthen the 'web protest, which culminated on February 24, 2004, known as Grey Tuesday, when more than 170 websites hosted a full copy of the album. Thanks largely to the legal support to the website such as illegal-art.org received from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization set up to protect digital rights, EMI and Sony / ATV both decrease their case and the Grey Album remain free to download.
